Raphael has built systems trusted by Anglo American, Rio Tinto, Fortescue, BMW, Barclays, Netcare and Investec, and by the people who breathe the air inside their buildings, mines and hospitals.

He is a software engineer and founder who brings the discipline of financial ledgers to the physical world. His companies turn dust, air and road conditions into records that hold up in front of a regulator, a board or a hospital's infection-control team.

On stage and in the classroom, he talks about the meeting point of AI, environmental risk and trust, and why the numbers that keep us alive deserve the same care as the numbers in our bank accounts.

The question that started it all · 2020

“Why are we so rigorous about money, but not about what keeps us alive?”

During the pandemic, Raphael watched hospitals, schools and offices guess at the air they shared, while every cent in the banking systems he built was tracked, timestamped and reconciled. That gap became The Ledger Method.

The story

From a vaccine institute in Rio to the air in your building

Chapter I · Where data is evidence

Born in Rio. Trained among scientists.

Raphael wrote his first professional software at the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz), Brazil's renowned public-health research institution, home to vaccine development and some of Latin America's most important laboratories. There he learned a principle he has never let go of: in science, data is not a report. It is evidence, and evidence has to be kept intact.

Chapter II · Every cent accounted for

A decade inside the systems that move money.

In 2010 he founded Hashtag AI Labs, an engineering lab whose work now runs for companies from Halliburton to BMW. In 2015 GreenModel®, the universal sub-ledger and cloud reporting platform whose engineering he led, was named a SWIFT Innotribe Semi-Finalist. He then architected, from the ground up, the ledger behind a pan-African remittance and wallet platform used by more than 20 million people in 70+ countries, a system where nothing is lost, nothing is overwritten and every entry can be traced.

Chapter III · Dust becomes data

Taking the ledger to the mine.

In 2019 he co-founded Sentinel AI and became named inventor on the patented DustScout technology (international filing WO 2020/250007; South African patent 2021/10088, granted 2023): rugged sensors that ride on haul trucks and record silica, dust and road condition in real time. The platform now serves operations linked to Anglo American, Rio Tinto, Fortescue and Whitehaven, and grew into RoadScout AI and VoltScout AI.

Chapter IV · The pandemic question

Making the air visible.

When COVID-19 closed the world, Raphael, a father of four, asked why the air in a classroom or a ward had no audit trail. In 2020 he co-founded SensusAir and wrote down The Ledger Method. Today SensusAir measures viral, mould and ventilation risk in the USA, South Africa, the UK, Australia and the Philippines, and was recognised with two international awards in 2025.

Chapter V · Passing it on

From building it to teaching it.

Raphael is now invited to share the method with healthcare, mining and technology audiences, from When Air Becomes Data at Healthcare Innovation Summit Africa to APIC 2026 in the USA. He is an MSc candidate at the University of Hull in the UK, and through AI4DFuture and mentoring programmes he helps young founders build AI that serves people and the planet.

The framework

The Ledger Method™

A practical way to make any physical signal as trustworthy as a bank transaction. It can be introduced in a keynote, run as a workshop, or built straight into an organisation's data platform.

Signal Entry Context Pattern Proof & action
01

Record

Every reading becomes an immutable, timestamped entry. Nothing is averaged away, nothing is overwritten. A correction is a new entry that points to the old one, exactly as in accounting.

02

Connect

Each entry carries its context: the site, the process, the vehicle, the room, the hour. Entries link to what came before and after, so cause and effect can be traced like a transaction trail.

03

Reveal

AI reads the ledger for patterns and anomalies while they are still forming, then turns them into action on the ground and proof for the regulator, the board and the investor.

Organisations call Raphael when…

A regulator, board or investor needs environmental numbers they can actually audit.

Dust, air or road conditions are costing lives, water or uptime, and nobody can see exactly where.

A financial platform has to scale across countries without losing a single entry.

An event needs someone who makes AI and ESG tangible, with real systems, real data and a bottle of cloudy water.

Giving back

The next builders deserve a head start.

Raphael founded AI4DFuture, a non-profit that puts applied AI in the hands of young founders working on the environment, social impact, governance and finance. He also gives his time as a mentor to startup and technology communities.

Beyond the work

Born in Rio de Janeiro. Husband, and father of four. Every system he builds is measured against one test: would he trust it with the air his own children breathe?
